Learn Viniyoga – the Yoga of Krishnamacharya and Desikachar

Viniyoga – making the Yoga suit the individual – with breath by breath instructions

Viniyoga Asana I Yoga Flash Card Books – Digital and Printed & Downloadable Yoga Stick Figures now available

A set of 52 yoga asana flash cards – available both as a digital ebook download and printed yoga flash cards for both Apple and Android Devices and Computers

Viniyoga is the name popularly used today to describe the yoga taught by the late Sri T Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, founder of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram (KYM) in India. However, it is not actually a ‘style’ of yoga, but is an approach using Yoga’s many tools – asana, pranayama, meditation, mudra, chanting etc.

In Viniyoga the emphasis is on creating a personal yoga practice for the individual, by selecting the right yoga tools depending on the situation. It is about making the yoga suit the individual, rather than the individual suit the yoga. Therefore, designing a yoga practice specifically for that person and their current needs.

Adjust the Instructions to your needs

If you are not familiar with Viniyoga, you might find some of the asanas in this eBook to be shown slightly differently to the way you know them from other yoga styles. These are the classical asanas, shown in their final full form, without any variations or modifications. They are the basis for most asanas, before they have been modified. The basic instructions and structure of the asanas, however, are still very similar to other yoga styles. Therefore, you can just use your knowledge to amend the instructions to suit your desired variation. A change could be as simple as turning a foot forty-five degrees rather than ninety degrees. Easy!

Just a few taps, the answers are at your fingertips!

Easy to use, making learning the yoga pose sanskrit names and instructions fast and fun.

Viniyoga Asana 1 yoga flash cards are simple to use. There are many ways to learn from using the flash cards. You can test yourself on learning the asana names, learn the full vinyasa-karma sequences for moving into and out of the poses, or even just learn how to draw the cute little yoga stick figures. There is a lot to keep you coming back each day.

The simplicity of Yoga Flash Cards make them the best yoga teacher training books – all of the important information for each asana is displayed clearly on just one page making it easier for the mind to digest and, therefore, making learning faster. These Viniyoga Asana I Flash Cards have been approved by Yoga Australia (the peak professional body for Yoga in Australia) as a Yoga Teacher Training Manual. Happy learning.

Below is an example of how the interactive eBook works. The printed cards and the ebook have the same information, but on the printed cards the yoga stick figure illustration is on one side of the page and the sanskrit and english asana names and instructions are on the back of the page. See the slideshow images below.

The asana name is initially hidden

In the interactive eBook (ePub) version, each asana flash card initially has the asana name (yoga pose) and instructions hidden to prompt you to learn the asana names first before the answer is revealed. When you are ready to reveal the answer, press the button on the top left and the correct Sanskrit and English asana name appears, along with a transliteration of the Sanskrit which will help you learn the names of the yoga poses much faster. The printed yoga flash cards have only the illustration on the front and the answers on the back.

Press the button and the name is revealed

How did you go – did you get the name of the asana correct in Sanskrit and/or in English? Just keep practicing and also listening to your teacher in class and the yoga pose names will soon become familiar. Also take notice of how the Sanskrit language is broken down into small words that are linked together. You will find that once you learn the word for “up” (urdhva) or “down” (adho), for example, it is easier to start stringing words together.

Press the tab to reveal the instructions

Press the tab at the bottom left of each flash card, and full instructions, along with stick figure illustrations, of each movement of the vinyasa-krama sequence will pop up. These give breath-by-breath instructions on how you would do the asana, or how you may teach it if you are a yoga teacher. The language is kept simple to reflect what a teacher could say in the given time of only a short Inhale or Exhale! Click the images above for an enlarged view.

Organised in Colour-coded Tabbed Classification Sections

The Viniyoga Asana 1 yoga flash card books are divided into 6 colour tabbed sections, breaking down the asanas into Classifications. Every asana has an inherent function in relation to its effect on the spine, so the spine has been taken as the reference point to group the asanas. Some asanas may have aspects of more than one classification, in this case it is the main effect, in the final form of the asana, that is taken as its classification. In the interactive eBook you can just tap or click on the classification tab to be taken straight to where you want to go, or swipe through the eBook page by page. Navigation is easy.

  • Samasthiti – Spine is correctly aligned – Back is vertical/straight – Often the reference point for other asanas
  • Pascimatana – Forward bend – Torso moves towards legs (or visa versa) – Done on exhale
  • Parsva – Side bend – Spine moves laterally – Usually done on exhale
  • Parivrtti – Twist – Spine twists whilst one point (usually the hips) stays fixed – Usually done on exhale
  • Purvatana – Back bend – Back moves away from the legs – Done on inhale
  • Viparita – Inversion – Torso inverted with head down and legs up – Usually done on inhale
