Hatha Vinyasa Yoga for Beginners Yoga Book

A set of 52 vinyasa yoga asana flash cards to help you learn the yoga poses

Hatha Vinyasa Yoga is not really a style of yoga, but is a general term that covers the many different vinyasa yoga classes taught today – advertised with names such as Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha Vinyasa Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Power Yoga or Hot Yoga or other imaginative names along these lines. Whilst the name may be different, the yoga poses (asanas) taught within all these classes will be very similar.

The term ‘vinyasa‘ literally means ‘to place in a certain way and is used to describe the linking of the breath with movement. Vinyasa yoga classes consist of a series of poses that are connected by following each inhale and exhale, with the movements flowing smoothly into each other. This explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow.

Not only for Beginners!

This yoga flash card yoga book is designed to help you learn the names of the yoga poses, which are shown both in English and Sanskrit, and simple instructions on the alignment for you to focus on whilst in the yoga pose, along with modifications if needed. The asana name is initially hidden from view

Each asana flash card initially has the asana name (yoga pose) and instructions hidden to prompt you to learn the asana names first before the answer is revealed. When you are ready to reveal the answer, press the button on the top left and the correct Sanskrit and English asana name appears, along with a transliteration of the Sanskrit, which will help you learn the names of the yoga poses much faster. To learn more about learning the Sanskrit for yoga pose names, visit our Blog where it is explained in more detail.

Press the button and the name is revealed

How did you go – did you get the name of the asana correct in Sanskrit and/or in English? Just keep practicing, and also listening to your teacher in class and the yoga pose names will soon become familiar. Also take notice of how the Sanskrit language is broken down into small words that are linked together. You will find that once you learn the word for “up” (urdhva) or “down” (adho), for example, it is easier to start piecing words together. To learn more about learning the Sanskrit for yoga pose names, visit our Blog where it is explained in more detail.

Press the tab to reveal the instructions

To find out information on what to do in each yoga pose, just press the “Instructions” tab at the bottom of each flash card, and simple instructions on a few of the key points to focus on in the asana will pop up. Arrows point to specific regions on the body to indicate where they ideally should be positioned. When you are in a yoga class it is very hard to take all this information in and remember it. Therefore, you will find the information that you learn from these yoga flash cards very valuable when next in class.
